Michael A. Mishaan is Of Counsel to the Firm, practicing primarily in the areas of real estate finance and development, with substantial experience in all aspects of commercial leasing, lending and conveyancing.
For the past three years, Mr. Mishaan practiced with Zalta & Mishaan LLP, a firm which he founded in 2000 and which concentrated in the practice of real estate, corporate and tax law. Prior to the formation of that firm, he was a partner in the law firm of Battle Fowler LLP, where he garnered special expertise in the negotiation and financing of joint ventures engaged in the use and operation of all kinds of real estate and related activities, including telecommunications, hotel development, executive office services and parking. Over the past fifteen years Mr. Mishaan has represented public and private real estate investment trusts (REITs), real estate mortgage investment conduits (REMICs), hedge funds, conventional and mezzanine lenders, developers and investors, as well as large corporate users of real estate in industries as diverse as health care, media and entertainment and the Internet. Developer clients have included owners and operators of shopping centers, multiple use buildings (i.e. retail/office/residential), hotels residential towers, office parks, technology centers, warehouses and industrial facilities. Thoroughly familiar with complicated financing and structuring techniques, Mr. Mishaan brings a high degree of sophistication, professionalism and efficiency to even the more basic commercial transactions.
In 1996, Mr. Mishaan was appointed by the Bar Association of the City of New York to serve as a member of its Committee on Real Property Law, an appointment he held for a two-year term. While on that committee, he worked on its Mortgage Loan Opinion Subcommittee to produce, in conjunction with the New York State Bar Association, their joint "Mortgage Loan Opinion Report".
Mr. Mishaan received his degree as Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School (1988), where he served as an editor of the University of Chicago Legal Forum. He is admitted to practice in both New York and New Jersey.
