Ted Poretz


Ted Poretz, a member of the Firm, handles a broad range of civil and white collar criminal matters. Mr. Poretz litigates before state and federal courts throughout the country as well as in private party, administrative and enforcement proceedings brought before FINRA, the New York Stock Exchange, the American Arbitration Association and the New York Mercantile Exchange. Mr. Poretz’s practice includes the litigation of complex construction disputes, employment-related matters, estate matters and a wide variety of commercial contract and real estate matters. He has represented individuals and business entities before the Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S. Attorney, the New York State Attorney General, FINRA and other SROs in inside trading, market timing and other kinds of regulatory investigation. In real estate, Mr. Poretz has litigated, on behalf of contractors, architects and property owners, a wide variety of issues, among them, issues related to ground lease rights, mortgage foreclosure, air rights and quiet titles. He has also brought and defended a number of cases arising out of the Condominium and Cooperative Abuse Protection and Relief Act, including the leading decision in the field, 156 East 56th Street Owners Inc. v. Darnet Realty, and in addition, is experienced in a broad range of construction and mechanic's lien lawsuits, on behalf of both contractors and property owners. Mr. Poretz also litigated the first lawsuit arising out of the Liberty Bond program to reconstruct Lower Manhattan in the wake of September 11, successfully persuading a federal court to dismiss a challenge to our client's entitlement to more than $400 million in allocated Liberty Bonds. Mr. Poretz began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan , where he tried in excess of 30 cases to verdict. He later became an assistant commissioner of the New York City Police Department. Mr. Poretz is admitted to practice law before the courts of New York as well as the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the United States Court of Appeals for the First, Second and Seventh Circuit. Mr. Poretz received a Juris Doctor degree from The George Washington University Law School in 1979, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University in 1976. He is a Member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York .
