Robert J. Anderson
Robert J. Anderson is Counsel to the Firm, in the Firm’s Labor & Employment Law group. With over a decade of management-side labor and employment law experience, he has successfully defended his clients' interests in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies, including the EEOC and the New York State Division of Human Rights. His cases have included discrimination and retaliation claims brought pursuant to Title VII, the ADEA, and the ADA, as well as federal (FLSA) and state wage and hour claims and other employment claims brought under federal, state and local laws. In addition, he represented a national client at unemployment insurance hearings around the country.
Mr. Anderson has represented and counseled clients from a variety of industries, including hospitality (restaurant & hotel), retail (luxury goods), media/entertainment, healthcare, banking, manufacturing, and transportation; he has worked with large corporations, small businesses, and various non-profit organizations.
He has conducted investigations into alleged employee misconduct by conducting witness interviews and liaising with human resources personnel, and he has prepared position statements for submission to various human rights agencies. He has proactively counseled clients on risk-avoidance strategies and other H.R. matters, including wage and hour, employee discipline, and employee classification. He has extensive experience in drafting employee handbooks, sick leave and other leave policies, and employment and separation agreements.
Mr. Anderson began his legal career as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the New York City Law Department’s Labor & Employment Law Division, where he was named a legal “Rookie of the Year” and he gained valuable trial experience successfully defending the City, its agencies, and the NYC Department of Education. Subsequently, at Landman Corsi Ballaine & Ford P.C., he was the lead associate of the firm’s growing labor and employment practice in its Manhattan office. At the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, he was part of a small team of attorneys recommending formal agency interpretations of the New York City Paid Sick Leave Law when it took effect in 2014. Prior to joining Ellenoff Grossman & Schole LLP, he was an attorney at DLA Piper LLP (US) in its Employment Group, where he worked with national and international clients on a wide variety of employment law litigation and counseling matters and developed an affinity for e-Discovery.
Mr. Anderson received his B.F.A. with Honors from Penn State University (University Park), where he was a University Scholar. He received his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, where as a law student he was the winner of national and school appellate advocacy awards.
He is admitted to practice in the States of New York and New Jersey, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
